PORTLAND – The local National Weather Service branch located in Portland issued a flood advisory with potential thunderstorms this afternoon for Washington County, warning of the potential for minor flooding in poor drainage areas on Tuesday, September 10 from about 3 p.m. until 5:45 p.m..

According to the Portland NWS, rainfall as heavy as .5 to .75 inches could be expected in 30 minutes, while scattered heavy showers throughout the county could result in an inch of rain in an hour.

The NWS says that most flood deaths occur when drivers attempt to cross flooded roads and underestimate the ability of just a small amount of water to sweep a vehicle away.
