Esther Lilly Hundley & Charles Hundley (written as Charley/Chas), the author of the diaries and her husband.

Bill (written as Billie) and Elsie, Esther and Charles’ firstborn and his wife. 

Ted and Thelma, Esther and Charles’ second-born and Ted’s wife. 

Gladys and Roy Bills (written as Mr. B. or Mr. Bills), Esther and Charles’ third-born and her boyfriend. 

Mon Sept 29 – A nice day. I made Gladie a gingham dress, she embroidered it. Billie & Elsie came about 9:30. The mill did not run. Billie took Hallie & went over mountain hunting, did not get back till dark. Ted & Thelma & Rife came by from town. Rife had a sore hand. Thelma had a case of poison oak. Billie & Elsie went home about 7:30. Charley killed 2 veal calves. 

Tue Sept 30 – Clear & lovely fall day. I made my new print dress, one I got in Hillsboro. Fixed Gladie’s coat lining. Granddad Herrick came. Troy & Vera & Freddie came over for awhile after supper, stayed till 8:45. Troy cleaned out the well. 

Wed Oct 1 – A clear lovely fall day. I put out a wash, then canned 23 pint of piccalillis. Scrubbed kitchen, put up clean kitchen curtains, put a quilt inn frames & tacked it by 11:45. Gladie got dinner. Got a letter from Uncle Henry, he is coming Sunday afternoon. Gladie & I slept a little, then went to Gales City & cemetery. Took some asters down, came back, I hemmed the quilt & picked seed beans & cucumbers. Oscar took over the pool hall again from Art after a year. Dick is running it.

Thur Oct 2 – Clear & sunshine, some fog. I washed 5 quilts then put another quilt in frames, tacked it out by eleven o’clock. The pink hour glass quilt. Fixed the fur on Gladie’s coat. 

Fri Oct 3 – Foggy all day. We did our ironing & churned. I cleaned & pressed our winter coats, then made Gladie’s dark print dress by soon afternoon. Then we slept a bit and Maggie & Bert came about 2:30, they had just moved in a house at Shefflin Station. They stayed for supper, left about 6:45. Then Gladie & I fixed & went to church at Gales City, just 8 there. 

Sat Oct 4 – Foggy again. Did our usual Sat. work, went to town in p.m. Oliver went with us. We took in show, “Last of the Duanes” by Zane Gray, a dandy play. We went on up to Camp to see how Elsie was, all right so far. 

Sun Oct 5 – Smokey & foggy. I made pumpkin pies & did a lot of other cooking. Gladie & I went to church at eleven. Ted & Thelma came for dinner. Afternoon, Ted, Gladie & I went down town to meet Uncle Henry, he came from Levas at Graham Wash. He came on 4:10 bus. Billie took Elsie to hospital about 6 o’clock, the baby came at 10 p.m. He came out home just about 12 midnight to tell us the news. Then he & Gladie went on up to Camp to tell kids.
